The Backefix FAQ

Do you have any questions about our products or services?

We have most of the answers in our FAQ!

Product questions

What is special compared to other products?

Actually, it’s all just silicone…
But what matters is what you do with it. What texture, surface, material thickness and flexibility should be achieved?
How is a surface texture achieved that prevents sticking and does not require greasing? Our specialization and size allow us to maintain a permanent product focus compared to large (corporate) competitors.

Why did my pastry stick to the mold?

We are constantly working on the non-stick properties of our products so that your pastries do not stick to all kinds of doughs and recipes without greasing.
If this does happen in your constellation, please try this trick (works especially well with the bundt cake): Pour in the pan before the dough, rinse with cold water and only shake out, do not dry it.

How is production done and where do the raw materials come from?

Since we are asked this question very often, we have set up a separate page on the topic: Production.

Isn't silicon, which is used to make silicon, toxic?

In short, the basic material silicon, from which silicone is made, is not toxic at all.
Silicon is a natural element bound in quartz (sand and gravel).
But silicon is much more an important trace element that is also found in many foods.
It is often referred to as the beauty trace element and you can even buy it as a supplement in capsules.
You can read more about our silicone production on our separate page on production.

Is silicone recyclable at all?

Yes!
There are many processes to recycle silicones correctly and almost completely, such a process was recently improved by three students under a chemistry project from Jugend forscht e.V.
More information here.

Cradle-to-cradle or upcycling?

Cradle-to-Cradle not possible: We have often asked ourselves whether we could not create a separate recycling cycle.
But unfortunately, recycling companies demand too high minimum purchase quantities, which we simply do not have.
In addition, as an online-based company, we do not have any nationwide contact and drop-off points.
Currently, it is probably the case that the end consumer disposes of the product in the yellow bin at the end of its life. Upcycling as the best alternative: As a matter of principle, we have a high level of durability in mind when developing our products.
But you also have great opportunities with our products in the afterlife.
Depending on the product, it can be repurposed as a shelf, underlay, herb garden, soap mold, mold, etc.

What exactly makes your products sustainable?

Backefix baking utensils help you avoid disposable and disposable utensils such as baking paper and paper cups.
These disposable utensils are multi-component products, consisting of paper, Teflon and wax layers, so they are neither sustainable nor recyclable.
In comparison, our silicone molds are one-component products that are made exclusively of silicone.
In special recycling processes, silicone can be almost completely recycled.
Backefix baking utensils are very durable and generally help you save a lot of resources.
For example, you don’t need to grease the molds and have an easy wash-up because nothing sticks.
Save time, calories and use them for the finer things in life!

And what makes cookie cutters sustainable?

In fact, some products have recently crept in that do not necessarily replace disposable and disposable utensils.
These include, for example, our cookie cutters and dough scrapers.
What were we thinking?
Quite simply, we wanted to offer more durable and even better product alternatives.
Since we are silicone specialists anyway, we thought outside the box and tried to use our skills.
For example, we have given our stainless steel cookie cutters a silicone coating in this way.
So they are now not only damn good-looking, but also effectively protect the palm of the hand when cutting out cookies.

Are silicone baking pans safe?

Yes, Backefix silicone baking pans are harmless.
They are food-safe, BPA-free and heat-resistant. Attention, there are manufacturers who produce in a cheap way and shorten or even omit the baking (tempering) of the products.
Such products may be questionable because they could still emit volatile substances.
At Backefix, all silicone molds are baked in blast furnaces for 4-8 hours after casting.

Are your bakeware BPA-free?<br /> PFAS free?

Yes and yes, all Backefix silicone baking pans are food-safe, BPA-free and free of the poison of the century PFAS (because we create the non-stick surface purely from the silicone structure instead of using chemicals and Teflon).

Why is my baking pan or baking mat discoloring?

The Backefix silicone baking pans and silicone baking mats have been developed primarily for baked goods.
They have a very smooth surface, which initially prevents them from sticking, but there should be almost no stubborn stains on the outside.
Discoloration or stains occur when preparing very high-fat or oily foods, exceeding the maximum temperatures, with special spices or a combination of these and other factors.
It may also well be that other foods that are not listed and perhaps have not yet been tested by us lead to discoloration. Why exactly is this happening? This is due to the nature of flexible silicone and at the same time the density of saturated fatty acids in our food, as well as other certain foods.
At high temperatures, the density of saturated fatty acids is higher than that of silicone, which expands under heat.
Under these circumstances, isolated high-density molecules can seep into the silicone, leaving discoloration.
Once the silicone cools, these discolorations will initially remain below the surface of your mold or mat, while the surface can be ‘squeaky clean’ at the same time after a wash cycle. But don’t worry There is an all-clear, on the one hand, the discoloration caused by fat and food is only an external flaw and does not affect the function and longevity in any way.
On the other hand, we have listed all the possibilities and tips for the best possible cleaning in another question here in the FAQ .

Cleaning: how do I remove discoloration and stains?

If you have now read in the other question here in the FAQ why discoloration occurs, you now know that it does not affect the function and longevity of your product.
At this point, however, we would like to pass on to you our concentrated knowledge, which we have tested in various constellations on the subject of cleaning over the years. What helps?
Cleaning Basic:

  • Clean promptly
  • Use preferably hot water and fat-soluble dishwashing liquid or in the dishwasher
  • Do not use abrasive brushes or pot sponges to avoid damaging the silicone

Intensive cleaning: For more stubborn stains, odors or discoloration, there are special procedures that we can recommend to you.
To do this, first do the basic cleaning and then one or more variants:

  1. Salt bath / sodium bicarbonate bath: Boil a pot of baking soda or salted water.
Alternatively, you can do the double boiler in your sink.
Place your silicone product in it for a few minutes.
Then carefully remove the product and rinse it off.
  2. Baking soda / lemon / vinegar ‘Scrub‘: Rinse your product properly with hot water and fat-soluble dish soap until it warms up a little.
Then wet the surface of your product with baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar or a combination* of these.
Leave it on for a few minutes.
Now you can wipe your product directly from the grease residues with a sponge or dishcloth or you can put it again briefly in a prepared hot water bath and wash the product off shortly afterwards.
  3. Alcohol cleaner: The scrub procedure can also be done with alcohol, we recommend drinking alcohol, for example.

*unfortunately there is no ‘one solution’ due to various factors, you are welcome to try combinations of the scrub agents and the variants.
Heating is important because it loosens the structure of the silicone and trapped molecules can be bound more easily. Note and compromise Silicone has a naturally soft and flexible property and is not a Teflon pan or rigid pot tray.
As long as your product is externally cleaned and clean, you can use it without any problems.
With our tips, you will be able to remove most discolorations, as long as you care for your products regularly and clean them promptly.
But it is always possible that some deeper discolorations are not completely removed.
At the same time, as a young and committed team, we would like to express that we are working on this problem and that we do not want to exclude any of our products from the beauty contest in the long term. Recommendation for baking mat Since the Backefix silicone baking mat has a particularly thin silicone layer as a substitute for baking paper, it can often happen that stubborn grease penetrates it and discolours the underlying fibre core.
So if discoloration that does not affect the function and longevity of your baking mat bothers you, or if you prepare a lot of high-fat foods anyway, then we recommend that you take a look at our Backefix grease separation mat .
